Ten years ago, the city had been under siege. Blood-thirsty rioting gangs brandishing knives and swords were roaming with impunity seeking out anyone who was not of their religion. We heard a knock on our doors. On opening, the mob leader stepped in accusing us of sheltering the “other community”. A search of our house yielded no results. The two children at home had been scared.
Today, they step into adulthood knowing love from a childless couple hailing from a different religion. In humanity vs religion, religion had rightfully lost.
